Planning Meeting Summary
The January 21 planning meeting was attended by representatives from 6 companies and 2 universities. The 6 companies represented were:

Presentations and project proposals were made by researchers in the departments of chemistry, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering at Clemson and the department of electrical engineering at the University of Rome.
The following project topics presented at the meeting were of significant interest to at least 2 of the companies surveyed at the meeting:
- Advanced materials for the next generation of high energy density capacitors
- 3D integrated micro and nano structures for ultracapacitors
- Electrochemical capacitors
- Advanced capacitor designs for new electronics packaging technologies
- Ultra-fast, high energy density capacitor designs
- Ultracapacitor assisted powertrains
- Active load balancing to reduce emissions from power inverters and motor drivers
The consortium structure was discussed and the structure that was tentatively agreed upon has the following features:
- A $65k/year full-membership fee
- Renewable each year indefinitely
- Companies work primarily with one PI to define a project
- Research results distributed through quarterly reports and annual meetings
- All company proprietary information is protected. Primary sponsors of a project review all research results before they are distributed to rest of consortium members
- Members of the consortium have the right to pursue a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to any university intellectual property (IP) resulting from a consortium project provided they were a member at the time the IP was conceived
- Members can join or drop out at any time
